All we need is drinking water or iikatu

iikatu comes from the ii (water) and katu (good) in the indigenous language Nheengatu spoke by the Rio Negro, one of the biggest rivers in the Amazon.

iikatu is also a water purification system created to help people that live near rivers and lakes and, due to problems like lack of sanitation, do not have access to drinking water.

Frequently Asked Questions

(Or why iikatu is great)

How many families can have purified water from one iikatu?

Depending on the use, until 20 people - around four to five families - can have safe water to drink using the basic equipment configuration. We are open to discussing adjustments based on some specific demands. Feel free to contact us.

Is iikatu a global solution or it is only for places like Amazon?

The water crisis is global. To scale the solution, we want to partner with local institutions and produce a local version of the equipment as much as possible.

How much water can iikatu purify?

10,000 liters per month (or 2,641 gallons). It is important to note that the capacity of any water filter system varies depending on many factors.

Are there other benefits in use iikatu?

iikatu provides purified water and also electricity to use with LED lamps or change cellphones.

What is the story behind iikatu?

In 2021, when our team was visiting Manaus, the State of Amazonas capital in Brazil, they found that even with all water available for people who live practically over the rivers, there was no drinking water available. Then, as scientists, we tried to figure out how to help, and after some studies and creative processes, we built the actual iikatu.

Who can be involved in this project?

Anyone can be part of the solution, people, NGOs, and companies. There is space to help in many ways. Let's talk!

What partnership model is offered by iikatu?

We are open to discussing each opportunity and do our best to make iikatu available to those who need it. Having said that, the main idea is:

  • Find community centers, NGOs, and governments that could commit to installing or assembling the equipment and share the initiative's impact.
  • Get support from donors or sponsors to make the project sustainable.
